Location Analysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Since its inception in 1971 at Seattle\u2019s Pike Place Market, Starbucks has grown into the world\u2019s largest coffeehouse chain.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The company currently operates over 30,000 locations in more than 70 countries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In major metropolitan areas, Starbucks locations are seemingly everywhere &#8211; on some major thoroughfares in cities such as New York and Chicago there can be up to four locations in a two block radius.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Given this abundance, a a natural question arises: How does Starbucks go about its location selection?<\/p>\n<p>Through analyzing store data and Census demographics, we can gain insights into how Starbucks identifies a target market and expands within these markets.<\/p>\n<p>The map below shows all store locations in the U.S. (each dot shows one store)\u00a0 Clearly, Starbucks locations are skewed towards coastal areas and major metropolitan markets, which makes sense given the \u201cluxury\u201d of a cup of coffee that can retail for $4 or more. \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/nycdsa-blog-files.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/2020\/08\/daniel-brancusi\/screen-shot-2020-07-26-at-10305-pm-355041-3cZlO4vi-1024x534.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66537\"><\/figure>\n<p>The intuition from above is backed up by census data from the American Community Survey accessed through the <a href=\"https:\/\/census.gov\">census.gov<\/a> API.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Below, we compare demographic data for counties with a Starbucks location and those without.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/nycdsa-blog-files.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/2020\/08\/daniel-brancusi\/image-8-23-20-at-131-pm-179936-bbsYHj4t.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66539\" width=\"634\" height=\"410\"><\/figure>\n<p>The data shows that Starbucks targets locations with higher household income (median of ~ $53,000 vs ~$43,000) , larger populations ( median of ~90,000 vs ~18,000) and more individuals in the work force.<\/p>\n<p>Going back to our maps, we can see that Starbucks not only has more locations in areas with larger populations but also over indexes in states with major metropolitan areas.\u00a0 Washington is clearly an outlier in this respect but given the brand\u2019s roots it make sense that there would be a higher number of stores per capita.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/nycdsa-blog-files.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/2020\/08\/daniel-brancusi\/screen-shot-2020-07-26-at-10617-pm-843128-efxoZVZR-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66540\"><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/nycdsa-blog-files.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/2020\/08\/daniel-brancusi\/sbux-barplot-top-20-states-183134-iDKAKsqX.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66542\" width=\"579\" height=\"422\"><\/figure>\n<p>Given this information, the question that follows is, what counties that currently do not have a Starbucks should be considered for future expansion.\u00a0 From the correlation matrix below, we can see that both population and employment are strong factors into what make an \u201cideal\u201d Starbucks location.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"988\" height=\"407\" src=\"https:\/\/nycdsa-blog-files.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/2020\/08\/daniel-brancusi\/screen-shot-2020-07-24-at-45828-pm-288311-nLSuhb5L.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66543\"><\/figure>\n<p>Using both population and employment we train a logistic regression model to classify potential locations.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/nycdsa-blog-files.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/2020\/08\/daniel-brancusi\/traintest-979340-DVIpojQH.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66546\" width=\"604\" height=\"234\"><\/figure>\n<p>Given that this dataset is a few years old at this point we are able look at the locations that gave the highest probability of having a Starbucks and see if our views are aligned with the company\u2019s actual expansion.\u00a0 After looking though Starbucks current locations all but one of our highest potential counties now has at least one Starbucks location within the county.\u00a0 Only Wilson, Texas (outside of Lubbock, Texas) still remains without a Starbucks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/nycdsa-blog-files.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/2020\/08\/daniel-brancusi\/screen-shot-2020-07-26-at-14052-pm-806734-hDnwMvwc.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66547\" width=\"341\" height=\"366\"><\/figure>\n<p>Eventually, Starbucks will increase its footprint into the areas we have identified and expansion within counties \/ zip codes will require further analysis.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As an example, in New York City, Starbucks operates over 225 stores.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This analysis will also require deeper insights into competition, traffic patterns, and landmarks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"595\" src=\"https:\/\/nycdsa-blog-files.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com\/2020\/08\/daniel-brancusi\/screen-shot-2020-07-21-at-51952-pm-543987-W0886W8N-1024x595.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66548\"><\/figure>\n<p>However, we have provided a high level filtering strategy for Starbucks initial expansion strategy that will prove useful in managing county wide demographic changes and the opportunities that these changes may
